Pigmented lesions are all the result of the accumulation of excess melanin, the substance that gives our skin its color. Traditional methods for the removal of pigmented lesions include camouflage makeup, dermabrasion, chemical peeling, and surgical excision. Recently several lasers have been developed that treat these unwanted pigmented lesions.

A laser is a concentrated beam of light that is aimed at the skin. The lasers used to treat pigmented lesions target the melanin in these lesions. The melanin is vaporized into much smaller molecules that are then absorbed and removed by the body.
